Each week at CSC rehearsal we’ve been tracking our progress, mile by mile, on the way to April’s contest. Here are a few of the fun stops we’ve made along the way! Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram as we travel together on the road to Lexington.
Ohio Music Educator’s Annual Professional Development Conference 2016
We had great success at our booth at the Ohio Music Educators annual professional development conference. Participation in this event was spearheaded by our chorus, and joined by supporters from Voice of America Chorus, Southern Gateway Chorus (men’s group), and the Greater Cincinnati Harmony Festival for Teens (a summer barbershop camp that we sponsor). There were around 3000 educators and performers at the event, and we met more than 200 of them! CSC Director Lynn Hartmuth developed a simple “Barbershop Harmony Quiz” that we used as an icebreaker with people as they strolled through the exhibit hall near our booth. Sadly, only a handful of respondents got all the answers right, but it made for a great conversation starter about barbershop.
CSC collaborated with Gem City Chorus and hosted the delightfully successful Second Annual YWIH Festival one-day workshop on February 6th. It took place at Princeton High School, a local Cincinnati school that has recently built an incredible performance facility. They even have make-up rooms with lights and mirrors! The ladies all felt like stars!
Jennifer Cooke (Director of Scenic City Chorus) served as clinician, and Spot On! Quartet (2013 Harmony Queens of Harmony Inc. and 2nd Place SAI Region #4 Quartet Medalists) served as the teaching quartet. Tammye and Troy Kaper, along with Jen Davis, taught choreography moves. The event was coordinated by our own Liz Sabo Johnson, and (as always) in everything she does, she excelled.
Best of all was the performance for friends and family at the end of the event. CSC, Spot On!, and the YWIH Festival Chorus performed to a very appreciative audience. The YWIH Festival Chorus sang Sing and Celebrate and Firework. The combined choruses and quartet then finished with Happy/All About that Bass. (Click the links to watch our videos from the day.) What fun for everyone who was in attendance!
We happily welcomed Molly Huffman, as well as Tammye and Troy Kaper, for our annual chorus pre-contest retreat. It was a fantastic weekend of coaching, choreography, and, of course, wonderful food! Last year’s retreat was marked by several feet of snow, so when we had warm weather this year, well, we couldn’t help but make a few “sun angels” to celebrate!
What a difference a year makes!
